Delicious summer watermelon slushies recipe! Bring the frozen watermelon on your picnic (it'll double as an extra ice pack).
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
Well, what if life gives you 3 watermelons? Yes, 3!
Our family loves watermelon so when I saw them on sale this week I didn't hesitate despite already having one sitting on the kitchen counter. That evening when Shad got home from work he walked in the door with a melon crooked under his elbow too. That's a lot of watermelons, my friend.
So what do you do? You make slushies!

- Watermelon Vodka Slush: Be sure to read through the comments for variations.
- Watermelon Punch: I love my Blueberry Mojitos. So, the fresh lime and mint in this recipe caught my attention. Why yes, thank you—I will take one.
- Watermelon Margarita: I cannot wait to try chili powder in my next experimental batch of slushies! What an interesting ingredient. I am not sure why this recipe shared by Brian Boitano cracks me up, but it does.
Or course, everything tastes better in a pretty glass....

Your little ones can have virgin versions of all the drinks above. Consider these additional tips when making slushies with the kids:
- Go with whatever amount of watermelon you've got on hand. I used around 2 cups tops and it made a fairly decent amount.
- We added a dash of honey to make it a bit sweeter!
- I used an immersion blender to puree the watermelon. If you don't have a blender I think you could get away with putting the melon in a large Ziploc bag and mashing it!
- Instead of using a container I simply poured the liquid melon into a large Ziploc bag and popped it in the freezer.
- Once the juice is frozen solid pull it out and smash it into bits with the flat side of a meat tenderizer. Perfect! YUM.
- The texture of the slushie was very smooth & I instantly thought I might need to use this for margaritas instead of rocky ice.
- We adorned our slushies with frozen raspberries. Next time we might blend them right in!
The best part of experimenting with watermelon slushies? This tip from the FoodNetwork:
Bring the frozen watermelon on your picnic (it'll double as an extra ice pack) and let thaw slightly, then mash with a fork and spoon into cups.
