5 Strategy Games for Families

Published: Sep 8, 2022 by Zina Harrington · Post may contain affiliate links

There are tons of wonderful strategy games for families that easy to play that kids and parents will BOTH love. Here are five great options!

Forget the inevitable agony of playing a long, drawn-out, boring game of Monopoly with your kids. Turn off the TV, put down the phone, and try one of these strategy games for families instead.

Strategy games are not only are fun, they also help your kids develop valuable skills while playing. Here is a list of our favorite family strategy games!

5 Strategy Games For Families

01. Machi Koro

If your kids do love Monopoly, try this tabletop card game that takes as little as 30-minutes. Machi Koro Bright Lights Big City is currently the most popular game in our house.

02. Catan

Be careful with Catan and it’s many expansions. They will suck you into the board game vortex. It is fairly easy to learn (we usually go with YouTube tutorials), very strategic and has sold 22 million copies or so.

03. Pandemic

Pandemic is a cooperative game where you work together to find the cure. Cooperative games are a good way to take a break from competitive mentalities and work together. Forbidden Island is another, somewhat simpler, cooperative game that we enjoy.

04. Ticket to Ride Board Game

A train-themed game for ages 6 and up. Ticket to Ride is another great strategic board game for young and old.

05. Monopoly The Mega Edition

Just in case you love Monopoly we found a Mega Edition with additional properties and some rule changes to speed things up.

BONUS GAME: Risk

Over time, our two girls got to the point where they were able to master playing strategy games solo. Now one of their favorite things to do on vacations? Play Risk. On a rainy or snowy day, they'll set it up and make it a full day of fun. I admit, I opt-out of this one, but the rest of my family loves it.

Here's a photo of my partner playing the strategy game Risk with our young daughters at a coffee shop while we were on vacation. I sat quietly in another room sipping a latte and reading. It was the perfect afternoon!

The games on this list require your kiddos to use a variety of cognitive skills like memory, math, literacy and more within a single game. Combining all of these teaches your kids that they can take what they learn and use it in various scenarios.

Strategy games teach patience, teamwork, and good how to win or lose with respect. We always say at our house that a family that plays (board games) together, stays together — and is less prone to fistfights. 🙂
