Inside: This simple parenting tip will help even the most hysterical pre-schooler calm down.

Hysterical Crying Preschooler

Has your child ever gotten so physically worked up that they can’t stop crying? Has this happened at your house, too?

When my daughter was a preschooler, I’d give her a hug and say, “Let’s take a big breath together, so we can calm down.”

Sometimes this worked and other times, between breaths, she’d reply, “I. Can’t. Stop. Crying.”

I mentioned this issue to a good friend who ran a Montessori school for over two decades. Her experience working with young children astounds me. She quietly said …

“Give her a glass of water.”

I paused and asked, “Why?”

Why? After using this technique over and over again, I can tell you why NOW…

When you give your little one a cup of water they instinctively take a deep breath before drinking.

I cannot believe how well this SIMPLE trick works.

Sometimes my daughter will sob, “It’s. Not. Working.” To which I simply reply with empathy, “Then you must need another sip.”
