Here are a few tips to make your Valentine's Day movie marathon special:
1. Pick a collection of Valentine's Day movies in advance.
You don't want to be battling it out deciding the day of, pick your teen movies ahead of time. We like to play this little game to ensure everyone's voice is heard: they pick six movies they want to watch, you pick five from their collection, they pick four from your remaining, you pick three, they pick two.
NEW RELEASE: To All The Boys I've Loved Before
It can also be fun to watch a series of movies. My two teens adored the lighthearted Netflix movie, To All The Boys I've Loved Before. They are releasing the third movie in the series this Friday, February 12th. I can't speak for the third film, but the first two are well done!
2. Consider making it a mental health day and give your daughter a day off from school.
Make it memorable, take the day off from work and school to spend some quality one-on-one time together. My girls know we'll be doing a half-day this Friday, so they're working ahead with their school work to ensure they don't get behind.
3. Make special popcorn.
Make the day special with popcorn. If you normally make microwave popcorn, switch to the old-fashion stovetop approach. If you always do salty popcorn, try something sweet this time around. This is our family's new favorite salty & sweet popcorn recipe!
4. M&M's will make your teen's Valentine's Day better.
Some days it feels like our daughters are nearly full-grown adults, but deep down in their hearts, teens are still kids. Nothing lights up a teen's face like a big bag of M&M's. Eat them straight out of the bag or do something more playful like this...
Quick note: The original version of this recipe calls for air-popped popcorn, but we prefer store-bought popcorn for the recipe!
5. Add tiny adventures between the Valentine movies with your teen to refresh.
Lofting around watching two or three movies sounds like a dream to a teen, but loafing around for that long can actually bring you down. Sprinkle in another activity between movies to refresh the movie. Here are some examples:
- If you start your movie party early in the morning, make a run to Starbucks or your local cafe for a drive-thru coffee date.
- Go for a walk around the block together and get some fresh air.
- Buy a Valentine's Day cookie log and bake between movies. We like to add homemade icing to these!
- Go to your local candy shop and pick out a few expensive chocolates together. We love getting a little three-pack and savoring the quality.
