My kids are obsessed with those store-bought “Birthday Cake Cookies.” Do you know the ones I am referring to? They’re super soft and taste like they’re made out of 90% frosting and sprinkles.
When the girls saw a recipe for Birthday Cake Cookies on one of my Pinterest boards, they flipped out. We decided to give the homemade Cake Cookie recipe a whirl, with a little bit of a Halloween spin.

I should warm you, this recipe involved butter — lots and lot of butter.
Once the batter is mixed, it needs to chill. We popped the dough for our Halloween Cake Cookies into the freezer to expedite things.
The girls took turn rolling out the dough, cutting out circles and baking the Halloween Cake Cookies.
These can be a bit challenging, because the cookies should be cooked fully, but without browning. To keep things simple, be sure to bake your cookies on parchment paper. This allows you to easily remove the Halloween Cake Cookies from the baking tray onto the cooling rack in one fell swoop.
Now it’s time to start making the thick buttercream frosting. Like I said, butter–lots and lot of butter. We added orange food coloring to our Halloween Cake Cookies frosting for good measure.
You’ll want to begin to set-up a decorating station while your Halloween Cake Cookies cool. They need to be FULLY cooled or they’ll crumble. Consider covering your kitchen table with paper for quick-and-easy frosting and sprinkle cleanup.

To be honest, I didn’t think the homemade Cake Cookies tasted any better (or worse) than the store bought version. They were really time consuming to make, so I admit–that was a bit of a disappointment. That being said, the girls and I had an amazing afternoon together baking. There is definitely something to be said for that. After all, baking is love made visible.
