Collect memories, not things.
Earlier this year, my husband and I made a life-altering financial decision that would provide the opportunity to do more traveling with our family. When prepping for a family vacation, whether it is for the weekend or something more grand, we've adopted a slight variation of this "One Thing Rule." Here's the gist of it:

One Thing. That’s it.

Prep in advance and have each family member pick the single most important thing they want to do on your trip.

Designate an entire day to that One Thing.

Teach kids to confidently and safely search the internet for vacation inspiration. We've found one of the best starting points is to simple search: city name + CVB. The Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is usually a great place to find safe links for kids to research their One Thing. My ladies popped onto the HP Pavilion x360 and decided our spring adventure MUST include a kayaking trip.

Do you have younger kids? Try these tips:
When the girls were little, I would do a bit of advanced research and create a folder with designated links for them to review. You might also consider starting a Pinterest board with pre-approved One Thing links for you child to pick from!

Wander without purpose or reason.
Be sure to leave time in your schedule to wander. A good friend's father once said, "Plan a detailed vacation itinerary so you can break it." Follow your child's pace and let them explore.

P.S. A little more about the the HP Pavilion x360 ...

It is the laptop that doesn’t make you miss your tablet, and the tablet that doesn’t make you miss your laptop. It converts to let you work and play in the ideal mode: from notebook to stand to tent to tablet mode. • It is an 11.6 Windows convertible hybrid with a 360-degree hinge that transforms your experience:
  • When you need to get some work done – answer email, write a paper, prepare a presentation – it’s a notebook.
  • When you want to watch a movie, fold it and watch a movie without the keyboard in the way – it’s an entertainment viewer
  • When you want to play a touch based game turn it to “tent mode” - it’s a game screen
  • When you want to relax and surf the web, read a book or have fun with You Tube – it’s a tablet (keyboard is disabled when in tablet mode )
