Swing Big

Published: Apr 11, 2016 · Modified: Apr 10, 2019 by Zina Harrington · Post may contain affiliate links

I swing big, with everything I've got. I hit big or I miss big. -- Babe Ruth

I swing big, with everything I've got. I hit big or I miss big. -- Babe Ruth

I sit, munching on peanuts, listening to my husband and daughter talk ball. The crowd cheers as a pop fly is caught and I casually throw another shell to the stadium floor.

Ex-Brewer Carlos Gomez heads to the plate and, despite his Astros jersey, the crowd in Milwaukee still applauds. My husband tells her, "You know what I like best about Carlos Gomez?  Sometimes he swings so hard that he falls down."

I think about all the times he's played softball with the girls in the yard, all the times he's taken them to the park, all the times he's shown them the importance of playing hard.

Inside the diamond (and in life), it is important we teach our girls to embrace failure as a necessary component of success. We must teach our girls to swing big in life.

They chat about Gomez for a few more minutes then he grabs her little hand and asks, "How's your manicure holding up?" My heart smiles.

Here's to raising strong women,

A Must-Read Book...

I just ordered this on Amazon. I can't wait to read it with my girls.

Throw Like a Girl: How to Dream Big & Believe in Yourself by Jennie Finch

Throw Like a Girl: How to Dream Big & Believe in Yourself Here's the description:

Sports help preteen and teenage girls make the right choices in a society that is sending them incredibly mixed messages about who they are supposed to be. Yet no one is speaking directly to these girls.

Jennie fills the role of girlfriend, big sister, team captain, and mentor. A smart, credible, and accomplished voice from an athlete who is strong and feminine, fiercely competitive, and fashionably cool, Jennie is someone young women will listen to and take to heart. Jennie's message: Believe in yourself. Go for it, girls.

The reviews look great:

This is absolutely mandatory reading for any parent or young girl who wants to participate in any sport. This is not about learning the fundamentals of any certain sport. It's about learning the fundamentals of living and how athletics can contribute to a healthy and productive life. Too many people can't connect the two. -- By LoMac

This was an excellent book for my 9 year old softball player. She relates well with what Jennie discusses and how she says it. Jennie tells her story from being young, feeling pressure, facing doubters, on to how to handle success. After each chapter she gives tips specific to the topic. Well written and fairly easy for my 9 year old to read. I can see my daughter referring back to this in the coming years. She recommends and shares it with her friends. Excellent book for non-softball players as well. -- By nyteachnc

My daughters and I love this book. It is very well written and gives girls that boost of confidence. We read a chapter at a time out loud, it shows them that hard work does pay off even when people tell you that you will amount to nothing, you keep on trying! -- By HPRMLC
