My children ask for two things when we sit down to dinner most nights:
- "Tell us stories about when we were babies!"
- "Can we play 'Would You Rather'?"
I don't know about you, but by the time I've handled after school snack, a dosing of free time, homework, overseen household chores, piano practice for both kiddos, and prepped and cooked a healthy dinner now plated and on the table, my mind feels more brain dead than ready to tap into the memory recesses or creative juices. Perhaps that's more personality than energy level related, but I've never been good at being "put on the spot." I love the idea of playing "Would You Rather" (sometimes also called 'This or That') but my mind draws blank, every single time, when they ask to play at dinner.
We have exhausted the lists I've googled or found on Pinterest, so I decided to spend some mental time creating a NEW list of Would You Rather questions for an interesting discussion around the dinner table with your children.
As a side note, both my son and I struggle with making decisions. I chalk that up to our extreme perfectionistic tendencies. Playing this game has been a good exercise in practicing making ourselves choose one or the other answer. It may seem silly, but when it comes time to make tough choices where there isn't one clear 'right answer' or even less consequential choices that don't truly garner mental agony to decide, I believe these 'dress rehearsals' of decision making can help us learn better decision making skills as well as letting go of the illusion of finding THE RIGHT ANSWER.

I know better. I know better. I know better. The whole morning was ‘off.’ I slept too late. I took the dogs out too late. I had to wait forever for the puppy to poop. I woke the kids late. I got The Lady in the shower late. I started cooking breakfast late. They started eating breakfast late. Then I spent their entire breakfast time looking for the cup of coffee that I’d poured before putting The Lady in the shower. I couldn’t find it anywhere - Meanness, Innocence, and Defense
I saw it the moment she walked in the door that Friday evening.Something was wrong. Not her normal 'I didn't get my way' kind of wrong but a deep, consequential wrong. In a millisecond I had time to think a thousand year's worth of thoughts.I had forgotten.
