Spiders and spider webs are a favorite theme to depict as Halloween draws near. We draw and paint spider webs, create spiders out of pom-poms and pipe cleaners, and cut spider webs out of paper.
Recently, my daughter Daphne has been doing spider web drawing after spider web drawing on her own and unprompted.
I decided to build off of her spider web drawing interest by doing a simple spider web art project with her and a preschool friend using a couple of our favorite watercolor techniques — watercolor resist and salt.
They loved it! And the results were beautiful, if not exactly spooky.
Watercolor Resist Spider Web Art Project for Kids
MATERIALS
- Watercolor paper
- White or light-colored oil pastels or crayons
- Watercolor paint in dark colors such as black, blue, and purple (we used liquid watercolors)
- Salt
Simple Watercolor Instructions — Spider Web Art
1. First, make a spider web drawing on your paper with a white or light-colored oil pastel.
2. Paint over and around the spider web with your watercolor paints.
3. Sprinkle salt on the watercolor paint while it's still wet. This is an optional step but is especially fun for kids and creates a lovely mottled effect as the salt absorbs the liquid around it.
4. Let dry, rub off the salt, and display.
If you like, you can add a spider to your spider web with a drawing, a collage, or even gluing on one of those cheap plastic spiders.
