10 Tips for Playing on Pinterest

Goo goo gaa gaa? My favorite thing about Pinterest is that as a social network it reminds me of that magical 6 to 9 month infant age.  You know, were the child is almost about crawl, but still sits in your lap. The baby is nice and sturdy, loveable, smiling, happy…. but like everything in life, things will change as it grows. Nonetheless, I am thoroughly enjoying this early phase of Pinterest mostly because there are truly no defined rules of social conduct. There are so many newbies streaming into Pinterest, the culture is a constantly shifting.

Pinterest is what you make of it.” When I first joined Pinterest this summer I took this comment to heart. Yesterday I asked you to join me in being a Pinterest Punk. One follower confided on Facebook:

It’s so true! Hardly anyone says anything, but I’m not sure that is bad either. With so many things grabbing my attention these days (fb, flickr, blogs, twitter–to name a few) I kinda like that I can just pin away and not have to ‘talk’.

I thought about her comment a long time and realized there are moments I do appreciate the silence & the lack of pressure, especially when I am on my iPhone. Below are 10 traditional tips for playing over on Pinterest, but I’ve realized this week…

The #1 RULE at Pinterest can be found at the core of their statement, “Pinterest is what you make of it.” Don’t follow anyone’s rules; it is what you make of it. If you like it quiet, enjoy the echo of silence. If you want to chat, start up a conversation. If you want a board about miniature unicorns, go for it. I am pretty sure that more than one of my followers has perused my Nat Dee Loves Tooth Paste for Dinner board and has just shaken their head in either disgust or confusion. C’est la vie!

Here’s to you Pinterest! “I like you, very much… just as you are.” {Bridget Jone’s Diary Clip}

If you are new on Pinterest…

  1. Stand Out. I recently watched The Story of a Sign video again. Take note! Be non-traditional when you name your boards and you will get a better response.
  2. Use your words. I tell my kids this all the time. Be a grown up and use your words to describe your boards with gusto. Explain what you plan on pinning & why people should follow your board. Let them know what to expect! Be creative in your board descriptions and have fun.
  3. Little is the new big, befriend the average every day Jane. Most people come on to Pinterest and follow the big dogs that have a large number of groupies.  The problem with this? We’ve already seen their content because it has been re-pinned by a zillion and one members. There are many fish in this creative ocean. Look for smaller friends & your re-pins will feel fresh.
  4. The beautiful people, the beautiful people. It’s all relative to the size of your… {Marilyn Mansion} On Pinterest your photo counts, a lot. This is a visual network; if you want something to go viral it has to be beautiful. Sadly sometimes great content is overlooked because of a poor photo.
  5. I’m King of the World! Once you have a few boards & pins under your belt march up to the front of the ship and let everyone know you are now on Pinterest. Send out an email to friends, notify your Facebook and Twitter followers, if you have a blog post their icon, tell the world.

If you’ve been around the block…

  1. Be a show off. Did you know you can share your OWN photos on Pinterest? In the right hand top corner there is an “Add” button. Click there and hit “Upload” and then browse your computer for a file. Once your pin is posted you can hit “edit” to attach a URL to your photo. This is a great way, for example, to showcase your work and still link through to the tutorial you used. Check out this example, see above the image on the right? It says “Uploaded by user.”
  2. And you are? Be sure to fill in your profile. In the haste of setting up an account most people leave this blank. If you are too shy to write out a blurb about yourself consider finding a quote that inspires you. Pinterest recently took away the ability to send notes adding your Twitter or Facebook accounts allows people to still send you a message.
  3. Be yourself. Don’t be overly concerned about whether or not someone else will like your pin. Remember Pinterest is basically the equivalent of a very fancy, adult “All About Me” collage, minus the tape & poster board. Make sure it reflects you!
  4. Have a rocking ratio. Yes, re-pin as a way to collect cool ideas, but remember to be you and share some of your favorite recipes, blogs, and articles too. I am a bit heavy handed with my re-pinning. There is soooo much cool stuff out there. My recommendation is for every 5 things you re-pin be sure to add 1 *brand spanking new* pin to the world of Pinterest.
  5. Give us the flower, we don’t want the root. Be sure to pin the full url from the website. This is especially important with blog posts. Many people accidentally pin the root url because of the way the blogs are hosted. When people click through from your pin they land at the homepage of the blog instead of at the post you originally intended them to be.

Let’s Lasso the Moon Tip: Clicking on the title of a blog post
ensures you have the correct link to pin!

You can tell by quickly glancing at the URL before you pin it….

I’m a newbie to pinterest and it shows. :-) Thank you for a few tips to help “lasso” me in. Great tips and now i’m ready to fly.

Oh I remembering being new to Pinterest, isn’t it wonderful?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=677512392 Laurie Chambers Laizure

Great Post! I have about 5k pins and am full on Pinterest addict! http://pinterest.com/customizedwalls/

I do admit to pinning lots for my new custom printed mural business but I LOVE everything so lots of home design tips, recipes, etc.

    • Anonymous

Laurie, I have a board designated specifically to Let’s Lasso the Moon posts. I think you could do the same for your murals. As long as people know what they are signing up for when they follow a board I think it is fine to self promote. Just be sure to add a description that is fitting for the board. I am excited to pop over and look at your stuff.

  • Skampie

One thing that bothers me above all others is when art is pinned but the artist name is nowhere to be found and the pin links to a different visual bookmark site like fffound or something. I’ve spent countless hours chasing link trails to find artist source material and if I can’t find it I don’t generally pin it unless it’s super awesome and there is hopes that someone at sometime on pinterest will know who it is. http://pinterest.com/skamperdans/artists-i-heart/

    • Anonymous

That happens to me too with the Nature’s Great Escape board. However, over there if I ask “where is this or who took this photo?” usually eventually someone out there knows. I love that aspect of the collaboration! http://pinterest.com/pin/259590365991092960/

      • Simone

Would Google Images work for you? I often use it when someone posts a cool pic but the link doesn’t have the info I want. I just open another tab, go to images.google.com, and drag the pic in there. Sometimes I have to download the pic onto my computer or it won’t pull my pic into the search engine. But I always find what I’m looking for once it pulls my pic.

      That’s my #1 pet peeve.

  • http://www.flandersfamily.info/ Jennifer Flanders

To be most economical with my time spent on Pinterest, I “like” anything that interests me, then “pin” it to the appropriate board later. It is easy to scan my “likes” for all the quotes or crafts or outdoor living ideas and classify in batches.

    • Squishy

I didn’t even know you could do that!! Thank you!

    • Anonymous

Ditto. I didn’t know you could do that either. I *love* this idea. Very cool. Thanks for sharing Jennifer.

  • Organizer

Be positive when commenting. I hate to see haters being opinionated. If you don’t like it then don’t re-pin it.

    • Amy

Excellent advice. It Pinterest should be a place where everyone is free to express themselves. Not everyone is ever going to like everything. If you don’t like it, don’t re-pin it! If you think something is really cool, let the pinner know. Let’s keep this a fun & friendly place to spend way too much time!

    • Anonymous

In general I agree. The boards are supposed to be in my opinion like a collage showing who you are and what you enjoy, like, etc. However, there have been situations where I have attempted to invoke conversations, like on The Parent Watercooler: http://pinterest.com/zina/the-parent-water-cooler/

If you are specifically asking for someone’s opinion you cannot be angry if they do not have a positive opinion. :-) It is interesting to see how many people are apologetic when they disagree. I think it just goes to show that the social rule on Pinterest is to be agreeable & kind! Which is awesome.

  • Nutmegdesigns

I think of number 4 as adding fresh water to the stream with pins from outside Pinterest. On the other hand, I used to be a librarian and I love searching, and it’s easy to spend an hour just repinning.

    • Anonymous

I love the analogy! Yes, we need fresh water to keep the ocean of ideas flowing.

  • Indexmom

I just want to remind you that there are rules of conduct. We all signed the rules of conduct when we signed up for Pinterest. I love Pinterest and do alot of pinning and I am glad when pinners follow the rules and sad when they don’t . Maybe in your blog you should include these rules.

    • Anonymous

      Sure here are the rules:
      http://pinterest.com/about/terms/
*I can hear the Peanut’s teacher’s voice {yadda, yadda, yadda} as I read through them. I am speaking of the social norms and rules that we as an active group promote vs. the technical jargon listed here. :-) The post is simply 10 ways to “play” on Pinterest, nothing serious.

  • http://biggreenmeanie.wordpress.com/ Biggreenmeanie1

I’m still a newbie but this article was great and makes me want to start a new board for Pinterest Stuff! Yes, I like the browsing feeling that comes with pinning. It’s like flipping through a new magazine everyday. The comment you put about silence and lack of pressure does make this site a welcome change from facebook. And I agree if you don’t like my board, don’t repin. I don’t NEED the likes, but I do like them! If that makes any sense.
p.s. Never heard of Nat Dee but I think your board is adorable – Following!

I love Pinterest! It’s changed the way I read blogs. Now I expect a great image to link to. It’s funny that I never noticed before just how few images some bloggers use in their post. Or that an image looks great but when you want to pin the post the image doesn’t really show the subject of the post.

    • Anonymous

I’ve been frustrated a couple of times when I’ve wanted to share a post but there hasn’t been an image too. Sometimes what I do is go to Flickr and look under Creative Common images (so they are ok to use) and pin one of those… then I update the link to the blog post I want to share. I always give the photographer credit in my pin too. It is kind of a long work around, but I have done it for a few really cool posts.

  • http://pinterest.com/lisaelifritz/ Lisa Elifritz

Thanks for the tips! I love new followers and it’s great to find out how to get more. I have almost 6000 posts now and growing daily. Even a “puppy butt” category that people seem to love! http://pinterest.com/lisaelifritz/

    • Anonymous

Puppy butts cracks me up. I actually love your Alphabet Soup and Chihuly boards. I love Chihuly! If you are interested in being a collaborator on our Art Share board drop me a line at zina@letslassothemoon.com.

    • Deborah (Debi) Kirk Allen

I’ve seen puppy butt pins they are Cute! I have about 10,000 pins now! I’m pindicted! I wish people would better use the description of a pin it helps with the search feature, example if you pin a Puppy butt & call it Puppy Butts & I search for Puppy or Butts that pin should come up, thats a good description but If I repin a puppy Butt & change the description to cute or lol or must have, it will not come up when someone else does a search. So a recipe that is described as yummie is not , to me, a good pin. Also I try now to go to the original site (so even if my bff has the same pin I may not repin from her I go back further) espically for recipes to make sure the actual recipe is there & not just a photo of food & I try to give credit where it is due. I also wish the original pinners descripiton was locked in, them credit could be included.

  • Kathygreekmom

Thank you SO much for this info! I’m new to Pinterest, about 2 weeks, and didn’t know how to post my own pictures! And maybe you know about this: it may be my Mac, or not? When I click through a post, then want to go back to the main page, it takes forever to reload, then it seems like it doesn’t go back to the same page I started on..(.this is where my o.c.d. kicks in and I feel like I’ve missed stuff!!) Is there an easier way?

    • Ellie ETC

If you’re wanting to get back to the main page that appears after you’ve logged in, click on the big red Pinterest logo at the top of the page, and it should take you right back there – good luck!

    • cassie larson

Hi Kathy! I think I get what you are saying and that frustrated me too. So what I do is right click on the photo and “open link in new tab” – then I repin from that new tab. It keeps my Pinterest right where I left off and I don’t have to spend that bit of time waiting for it to reload.

    • Anonymous

It always takes forever for my pages to load too, too many pins! ;-)

Did you figure out how to get your pics up there? Just click that red “Add Pin” button on the top right near your name?

      • Debi Allen

I have 4 recipe boards now ,the reason it takes to long “fetching Pins” if I have to many in one board.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jennifer.whiting Jenny Whiting

I love Pinterest and I am basically planning my wedding on it! However, I have noticed a lot of what they call “thinspiration” on there. Some of it is linked to websites that promote unhealthy weight loss and it makes me so sad =(

    • Anonymous

Jenny, this is really depressing to read. My only comment to “thinspiration” is be the change you want to see in the world. Don’t re-pin that crap.

Oh how I wish Pinterest was around when I got married. I am jealous, you are lucky! So many cool ideas.

  • Debez

Thanks for sharing. My best tip would be to watch who follows your boards and check theirs out. They are following you because they have the same likes as you. So, check their boards out and follow the ones you like then you have a collection of followers that are like scouts or personal shoppers shopping for the same types of things. Makes your followers list customized to your own likes rather than a bunch of stuff you could careless about. Happy Pinning.

    • Anonymous

I love the revisions they’ve mad so you can now easily see who originally posted a pin vs re-pinned it. I have stumbled across some great boards this way!

    • Melody Wilkerson

I try to go back & ck everyone’s board who liked or pinned my item, I see lots of great boards that way..

  • http://www.facebook.com/bzirkledukes Brynn Marie Zirkle Dukes

This is probably the best Pinterest related blog post I have read in a while. Lately it seems I am reading a lot of “what’s wrong with Pinterest” or Pinterest how to’s, but they seem to have such a negative tone to them…they gave me the feeling of just getting caught sneaking in past curfew….anyhow, I like that you kept it light and friendly…def. adding this to my 13,600+ pins :)

    • Anonymous

Bryann, thanks for the kind note. I really do believe Pinterest is growing out of its infant stage into a raging toddler and then tomorrow it will be a teen. We are in control of our own user experience. We can still help shape and mold what it becomes, how cool is that?!?!

  • http://linux-blog.org devnet

The only thing that prevents me from being full on Pinterest is that they have NO Android client. It’s really stupid that they don’t since Android took over as the most prolific platform in the entire world…yet they continue to ignore it…and I’m definitely not one of the cool kids who have an Iphone.

But I use it a lot via web browser :)

    • Anonymous

I have the app on my iPhone, but sometimes it still crashes. I actually also have their site bookmarked on my phone and I use that as much as the actual app. It is optimized to be mobile friendly. Have you tried it? Does Android let you bookmark the same way? I admit I am Android oblivious. ;-)

      Thanks for the compliment!

  • Squishy

Thanks for taking the time to write all this down. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one still trying to feel my way around Pinterest. And you may have just inspired me to get off my duff and take some pictures of my jewelry and get them uploaded :)

    • Anonymous

      Yes, share with the world!

  • Renees Soirees

One Pinterest ethics code I would like to see people follow is, repin directly from the person where you found the idea. For example I have a colleague whose recent pins list looks exactly like mine, yet she seeks out someone else to repin the same pin from! Why bypass me? Is she afraid that her boards are all going to show the same source? I have a business so I like people to repin from me bc it gets my name out there. So don’t find the idea by looking at my boards & then search for someone else to repin it from. Does that make sense?

    • http://www.blog.keads.com/ Kristen

I do that, except when the person from whom I find a pin does not link to the original source or give credit to the original creator. I take a lot of care to make sure the person who originally created the content gets the link on Pinterest, not some anonymous tumblr blog who has reposted without crediting. http://linkwithlove.typepad.com/linkwithlove/

      • Anonymous

I agree Kristen. I get flustered with tumblr blog pics too.

    • Anonymous

The way Pinterest is now set up it shows the original origin of the pin. So if your co-worker re-pins a pin that someone already re-pinned from you… you still get the credit. That’s a lot of re-pinning. Hope that made sense.

Not sure why your colleague is purposefully avoiding repinning your stuff, but look for other fun followers who have better juju and want to share. There are lots of them out there.

And for those that are using Pinterest to promote their products (like on Etsy and other marketplaces), be sure to submit your best stuff to http://pinfaves.com for more exposure to your stuff from current Pinterest users and even non-Pinterest users who have yet to become addicted like the rest of us! :)

I reported Laurie C L (commenter below) for her abuse of Pinterest. Promoting your business by saturating boards with pins every 10 seconds (literally) is not in the spirit of the game.

Hi, Zina. Liked this post so much I linked to it today in a post entitled Neat as a Pinterest on my blog everyday epistle. Thanks for the good tips!

Thank you for the very last one, I can’t tell you how many times I have been so upset after going through page after page after page just to find that one post. Usually on the 8-10th page I just give up.

Just having a real great time here, I love that it’s so visual, a great way to keep & sort my recipes instead of pieces of paper. New books to read, travel ideas, home & garden & on & on Thanks….Melody

    Hey Zina,
I pinned my resurrection eggs on both the parent water cooler board and the recipes board. I don’t think it really belongs on the recipe board, so please feel free to remove it from there. It is more of a general parenting/holiday celebrating idea. Sorry, I should have pinned it to the water cooler board in the first place :) .
Thanks for this post. Very helpful. You are rocking Pinterest!

Question~ Can you add a PIN IT button to a Facebook Business page? How?

  • Jennifer

The people who don’t do that last one… well, I have to almost hate them a little bit. Stop ruining my life by posting awesome crafts and recipes and products and then taking me to a main website where I can’t find what I’m looking for! This is especially true with blogs. If you don’t write the exact name of the tutorial or recipe that the blogger used, it can be darn near impossible to find. Search functions on blogs are notoriously difficult, and I don’t want to have to search through 300 cookie recipes on a baking blog to find the yummy looking one I pinned.

Thank you for sharing your tips on Pinterest. You are truly a guru to learn from. I so enjoyed meeting you at BlogHer and your brief Pinterest tips were so inspiring to me. Thank goodness, someone who knows what they are doing! Lol. I have an I Pad and for the life of me….I can’t find the “add” button of which you speak….can anyone tell me how to access it! Second, I notice everyone seems to have their own blog…..is that something we should all do and how? Third, I like the “like” idea from Jennifer but wonder where you go to look at all your likes?

I will be soooooo appreciative of your help!
