The Opportunity to Shine

It’s a Wonderful Life |Frank Capra, 1946|
“What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word & I’ll throw a lasso around it & pull it down. Hey. That’s a pretty good idea. I’ll give you the moon, Mary.”

I wanted to share this movie clip for three reasons:

1. Lasso the Moon
It is a wonderful holiday classic and this scene always came to mind when thinking of names for this blog. {love it}

2. It Humbles Me
Earlier this year I met up with an old friend from high school, one of my favorites, who I was lucky enough to reconnect with on Facebook. He is an inspiring musician, constantly studying to better himself, traveling, living in a lovely apartment downtown, single, yadda, yadda, yadda. At one point he made a comment that made me laugh. After a short story about a friend of mine who is an artist he said, “See, that’s not boring, you know interesting people.”  {ummmm, cough}

I laughed because it reminded me of an episode of Modern Family when Claire realizes that a past co-worker thinks she is a loser for being a stay at home mom. Yet, at the end of the episode, Claire realizes she has more than she could ever ask for… Have you seen this episode? I think it really hits home for a lot of people. I love that no matter how uncomfortable the episode gets, it ends on a positive note.

This family photo from the movie really reminds me how luck I truly am. I am so thankful for my family, my friends, the creative people who inspire me, my “little” projects… just life in general. Thank you for being a part of this by reading. I feel very rich.

3. The Opportunity to Shine
At the end of the clip George starts to ramble about how Mary should swallow the moon so the light will shine from her finger tips and hair. Ah, I just love this little clip. It reminds me of this quote from the blog’s original post:

Together let’s stoke that flame by providing hands on, self paced, collaborative, challenging, enjoyful learning.  Let’s encourage divergent thinking, instead of convergent thinking; innovation instead of standardization.  Grab your child’s interest while it’s hot.  Let your child follow their interest wherever that passion leads, however quickly it leads them regardless of what other children their age are working on.  Give your children a lifetime love of learning.  See the light in your child’s eyes.  {Quote Source}

As the New Year approaches, let’s make a commitment for 2012 to get together and lasso the moon for our children.
Let’s give them the opportunity to shine.
